Welcome to the Workout Wanderer Support Center! Here you’ll find everything you need to get started, troubleshoot issues, and make the most of the workouts you’ve already recorded.

Getting Started

First Steps with Workout Wanderer

Workout Wanderer doesn’t record workouts — it reads the ones you’ve already recorded and shows you what they mean. Anything that writes to HealthKit works: Apple Workout, Strava, Nike Run Club, and the rest.

  1. Download and Install
    • Download Workout Wanderer from the App Store
    • Ensure your iPhone is running iOS 18.2 or later
    • Open the app and complete the initial setup
  2. Grant Health Access
    • Workout Wanderer asks for read-only access to your workouts, routes, and heart rate
    • It never writes to HealthKit, and it never asks for Location Services — it isn’t tracking you, so it doesn’t need to
  3. Pick a Workout
    • Your recorded workouts appear as routes on a map
    • Tap any one to open it
  4. Turn On a Heat Map
    • Choose a metric — heart rate, pace, elevation, cadence, running power, vertical oscillation, grade-adjusted pace, or power/effort
    • The route recolors to show you where you ran fast, climbed hard, or lost your cadence
    • Drag the legend wherever it suits you

Setting Up HealthKit Integration

Workout Wanderer needs read access to the workouts already in Apple Health:

  1. Open Workout Wanderer and go to Settings
  2. Tap “HealthKit Integration”
  3. Grant read access to workouts, routes, and heart rate
  4. Confirm permissions in the iOS Health app

The app requests no write access. Nothing it reads leaves your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Q: Is Workout Wanderer free to use?
A: Yes! Workout Wanderer is free to download and use. All core features are included at no cost.

Q: What devices are supported?
A: iPhone and iPad running iOS 18.2 or later. There is no Apple Watch app — but any workout your Watch records into HealthKit shows up in Workout Wanderer automatically.

Q: Does Workout Wanderer record my workouts?
A: No. It reads workouts you’ve already recorded with something else — Apple Workout, Strava, Nike Run Club, or anything else that writes to HealthKit — and turns them into maps and analytics. That’s why it never asks for Location Services.

Q: Does Workout Wanderer work offline?
A: Yes. All analysis happens on your device, so everything works without a connection. Only the map tiles themselves need connectivity.

Q: My workout is missing. Why?
A: Workout Wanderer shows workouts that have route data attached. If the app that recorded it didn’t save a route to HealthKit, there’s no map to draw. Check that you granted read access to both Workouts and Workout Routes in the Health app.

Privacy and Data

Q: Where is my workout data stored?
A: Your workout data is stored locally on your device. We don’t upload your personal fitness information to our servers.

Q: Can I export my workout data?
A: Yes. You can export workouts as GPX, CSV, or JSON, or share a route link directly from a workout.

Q: How do I delete my data?
A: You can delete individual workouts by swiping left on them, or delete all data through Settings > Data Management > Delete All Data.

Q: Does Workout Wanderer share my data with third parties?
A: No. We don’t sell or share your personal workout data with third parties. Read our Privacy Policy for complete details.

Heart Rate and Health Data

Q: Why isn’t my heart rate showing?
A: Heart rate data comes from Apple Watch or compatible Bluetooth devices. Ensure your device is connected and you’ve granted HealthKit permissions.

Q: How accurate is the heart rate monitoring?
A: Heart rate accuracy depends on your device’s sensors. Apple Watch provides the most reliable data for fitness tracking.

Q: Can I use Workout Wanderer for medical purposes?
A: No. Workout Wanderer is for fitness and wellness only. Always consult healthcare professionals for medical decisions.

Features and Functionality

Q: What types of workouts does it show?
A: Any route-capable workout in HealthKit — walking, running, hiking, cycling, and more. Workouts with route data get the full map and heat-map treatment.

Q: Can I compare two workouts?
A: Yes. Workout Wanderer compares your own workouts across metrics, route similarity, and physiology — so you can see the same route run at a different cost, and what changed.

Q: How do I see trends over time?
A: The Trends view charts your workouts over time, and Personal Records tracks your bests. You can also ask Siri — see “Siri Shortcuts” below.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Missing Workouts or Routes

Problem: A workout doesn’t appear

Solutions:

  • Confirm the workout is in the Apple Health app — Workout Wanderer only reads what’s already there
  • Grant read access to both Workouts and Workout Routes: Health app > Sharing > Apps > Workout Wanderer
  • Workouts recorded without route data have no map to draw

Problem: A workout appears but has no route on the map

Solutions:

  • The app that recorded it may not have saved a route to HealthKit — indoor workouts often don’t
  • Check that Workout Routes access is granted, not just Workouts

Problem: A heat map is empty or greyed out

Solutions:

  • The metric isn’t in that workout. Running power, cadence, and vertical oscillation need a device that records them
  • Heart rate heat maps need heart rate samples from a Watch or a paired Bluetooth monitor
  • Try a different metric — pace and elevation are derived from the route itself and are almost always available

Heart Rate and HealthKit Issues

Problem: Heart rate data not appearing

Solutions:

  • Confirm the heart rate data exists in the Apple Health app for that workout
  • Ensure HealthKit read permissions are granted in app settings
  • Heart rate is recorded by your Watch or monitor at workout time — Workout Wanderer can only show what was captured then

Problem: HealthKit data not syncing

Solutions:

  • Open the Health app and verify data is present there
  • Check HealthKit permissions in Workout Wanderer settings
  • Force close and reopen Workout Wanderer
  • Restart your iPhone
  • Re-authorize HealthKit access if needed

App Performance Issues

Problem: App crashes or freezes

Solutions:

  • Force close the app and reopen it
  • Restart your iPhone
  • Ensure you have the latest version of Workout Wanderer
  • Free up storage space on your device
  • Contact support if the issue persists

Problem: App runs slowly or is unresponsive

Solutions:

  • Close other apps running in the background
  • Restart your iPhone
  • Check available storage space
  • Update to the latest iOS version
  • Reinstall the app if necessary

Performance

Problem: A large workout history is slow to load

Solutions:

  • Use the filters to narrow the list by activity type, date, or distance
  • Very long routes carry a lot of samples — heat maps for these take a moment to render the first time, then cache
  • Restart the app if a view stays unresponsive

Workout Wanderer does no background tracking and never runs during a workout, so it has no effect on the battery life of the workouts it reads.

System Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS 18.2 or later
  • At least 50MB of free storage space
  • Workouts already recorded in Apple Health

Recommended:

  • An Apple Watch or other device that records heart rate, cadence, and running power — the richer the recorded data, the more heat maps have to show
  • No Location Services required: Workout Wanderer never tracks you

Tips for Best Results

Widgets

  • Add the Last Workout widget to see your most recent route at a glance
  • Add the This Week widget for a running total of the week’s work
  • Both read from the workouts already on your device

Siri Shortcuts

  • Ask Siri about your last workout or this week’s stats without opening the app
  • Personal Records are available by voice too
  • Find the shortcuts in the Shortcuts app under Workout Wanderer

Get Richer Heat Maps

  • The heat maps can only show what your recording device captured — running power, cadence, and vertical oscillation need hardware that measures them
  • Pace, elevation, and grade-adjusted pace are derived from the route itself and work on any recorded route
  • Compare two runs of the same route to see the difference in effort, not just time

Accessibility

  • Every chart carries an audio-graph description for VoiceOver
  • Dynamic Type is supported throughout — text scales to your preferred size
  • Insight importance is spoken, not just colour-coded
  • Available in English and Spanish
